What is Kratom and how is it traditionally used in Southeast Asia?
Kratom is the name of the Mitragyna speciosa plant which has been traditionally used in Southeast Asia for hundreds, if not thousands of years. The leaves are commonly brewed into tea or chewed and they have traditionally been consumed to energize workers while also generally easing bodily discomforts. Kratom has been known to provide various benefits such as pain relief, mood enhancement, and relaxation.
Kratom culture has developed around the practice of consuming the leaves and in Southeast Asia drinking Kratom tea is about as common as drinking coffee in the United States.
However, in the United States where kratom is consumed differently no traditions guide the use of Kratom. Instead, it is brought to the States in bulk without describing how to properly use it.
Furthermore, the dried Kratom leaves are ground into a fine powder to maximize the amount that can fit into shipping containers as well as prevent spoilage of the fresh leaves. Many people who are unaware swallow the powder, which can cause stomach issues like nausea as well as dehydration.
Kratom trees grow naturally in tropical forests in Southeast Asia, and they are recognized by their large, bright green leaves with sharp veins underneath.
